Aboriginal Youth Diversionary Program

Coonamble, New South Wales

Following many years of community discussion around addressing youth crime, a diversionary program has been established in Coonamble, designed to support some of the community’s most  at-risk young people.

The program is open to Aboriginal participants aged 10–25 years who live within the Coonamble LGA and who have had contact with, or are at risk of entering, the juvenile justice system.

A case management approach is central to the program. Each participant is supported through an individual case plan tailored to their needs. This may include referrals to local services to address challenges such as drug and alcohol use, health concerns, housing instability, family and community disconnection, and school attendance.

Alongside this, the program delivers a range of structured activities, including:

  • School holiday programs

  • Sporting activities

  • On-Country immersion experiences

  • Arts, culture and creative workshops

  • Practical life and home maintenance skills

These activities aim to strengthen cultural identity, build resilience, foster positive aspirations, and improve education and employment pathways. Participation is voluntary, and new registrations are currently open.

The David Liddiard Group (DLG) provides program management.  Program delivery is led locally, ensuring strong community ownership and connection.

The program continues to build strong partnerships with local organisations, employers and service providers. These relationships support collaborative program delivery, including   co-designed activities and opportunities for participants. An Advisory Group, made up of local stakeholders, provides guidance and supports a coordinated, community-led approach.
